OVERVIEW ;;

Hyundai has refreshed the popular i20 premium entry-level hatchback for 2017. The Hyundai i20 Elite now gets some exterior and interior upgrades along with even more added features that make it an even more compelling package. The updated i20 on the exterior front now gets a two-tone paint job option i.e. red or white with a gloss black roof option. Although the two-tone trend was popularised by the Vitara Brezza and then is available in the Ignis too, many i20 owners in the past have chosen to paint or wrap their cars in the same way that Hyundai is now offering straight out of the factory. EXTERIOR AND DESIGN ;

It would be a pretty bold statement to say that this is the best looking vehicle in its class, but we’re sure many others would agree with us. The designers have fortunately veered away from excessive cuts and slashes for the sake of making it look attractive and instead, the Elite gets an understated layout which grabs attention rather than begging for it. Overall, it has a clean and sharp profile that injects a sliver of sportiness into its image. Admittedly, if you removed the Hyundai emblem, we would’ve easily mistaken it for something made by a European manufacturer. The face is aggressive thanks to the sleek, swept-back headlamps, with muscular lines down the bonnet complementing the chiseled fascia. The chrome outline on the grille adds just the right amount of flash to the front. The Elite i20 is a handsome car thanks to the sharply styled front bumper, which also slims down the car’s front. Even the indicator lights hide in plain sight and are well-integrated into the headlamp cluster. The chrome door handles are a bit much, but then again, Indians do love their chrome. The 16-inch alloy wheels that are nothing short of droolworthy and are a design highlight. You won’t feel the need to forage through aftermarket options. Unlike the Baleno or Jazz, the Elite i20 doesn’t have any MPV-like overtones. The blackened C-pillar slims down the side profile, as does the shoulder-line and door cladding. It’s also interesting to see how the shoulder-line connects the tips of the head and tail lamps.The rear doesn’t get the same slimming elements as the front, but it isn’t bulbous like the Baleno either. INTERIOR AND COMFORT ;

As for the cabin, there’s really little to complain about. Overall quality is impressive (though still a notch down on the VW Polo), detailing is impressive (the column stalks feel very rich) and the layered dashboard looks suitably upmarket. If there’s a negative it’s that the screen for the audio system is a tad too small. Some might also find the knobs for the music system small and fiddly, but drivers do get their own set of controls on the well-finished, three-spoke steering wheel. Drivers will also like the good visibility and ability to adjust the steering for rake and reach. The supportive seats and general feeling of space enhance the front seat experience further. Access to the rear seat is nice thanks to the wide door aperture, and once inside you’ll be quite amazed by the space on offer. Legroom and headroom are particularly good and there is sufficient width to seat three. The rear seat also scores well for good back and leg support. However, the backrest is a bit too reclined and the bolstering on its outer edges hurts comfort when seated three abreast. Shorter occupants may also find the windows a little too high for their liking. If there’s a consolation, rear seat occupants do get a dedicated air-con vent in all but the base version of the i20.

And that brings us to features. The top-spec Asta trim we’ve featured comes with lots of equipment as standard. The list includes automatic headlamps, push button start, automatic climate control, an audio player with 1 GB of onboard music storage, Bluetooth telephone function and a reverse camera. Even the mid-spec Sportz trim comes well loaded, but frustratingly essentials such as a rear wash/wipe and a passenger-side airbag are only offered on the top-spec car.

ENGINE AND GEARBOX ;

The new i20 gets the same petrol and diesel powertrain configurations as before though minor tweaks for efficiency and better load management have been employed. I have driven the 1.4-litre 16-valve 4-cylinder CRDI. You get 90PS at 4,000rpm with a superb 222Nm of max torque between 1,500 – 2,750rpm from this engine. Max engine rpm cuts off at 4,750rpm. The power and torque ratings in the new i20 diesel are adequate for every situation though I do feel Hyundai should have tuned it for better bottom end characteristics. The turbocharger kicks in at 1,400rpm and the boost improves acceleration past that point however, under that mark it feels a bit sluggish. Dense traffic as a result will see you shifting through first and second gears constantly, moreover since it comes coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission which is a fuel efficiency enhancer. Hyundai claims an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 22kmpl for the diesel, with 19kmpl for the petrol. Interestingly the petrol engine gets a 5-speed manual. There is no automatic at the time of launch but expect one in the future.

Acceleration after that is brisk and makes this an effortless highway cruiser. Though having said that it’s no slouch in city traffic either, the responses are sharp and you can get going pretty quickly when the need arises to get past slower moving traffic in urban areas. The highlight of this drivetrain though is the slick shift lever which has short precise throws. I do like the way you can just give it a light nudge to slot into the required gear. Reverse gear on this can be found in the same place as first gear but engaging it requires you to raise the lever and then slot it into reverse. It’s a safer move unlike what you get in the VW Polo.

RIDE AND HANDLING ;

Hyundai has worked towards improving the ride and handling on the Elite i20 and it shows on the move. Though the suspension has been carried over from the older car in theory, the geometry as well as the damping characterisers have been revised significantly. The setup is slightly firmer than the older i20. Surprisingly, it hasn’t affected the ride and the i20 still rides quite well; it feels pliant, absorbent and well judged.

The improvement in handling on the other hand is more than obvious. The body roll, the pitch and the waywardness under quick direction changes have all been tied down tightly giving the i20 a more confident, stable and exploitable handling character. We would have liked a less artificial steering response though; the current setup fails to connect the driver with the happenings. Braking on the other hand, even though Hyundai has ditched rear disc brake in favour of a drum setup, is stable and strong.

SAFETY ;

The Hyundai Elite i20 hasn’t been tested by Global NCAP yet but the first generation Euro-spec i20 got a full 5-star crash test rating at Euro NCAP. The sad thing is that Hyundai India doesn’t offer 6 airbags anymore and the Elite i20 now comes with only dual front airbags, that too on the Asta variant, while only Sportz and Sportz (O) get driver side airbag. ABS is also offered only with Sportz, Sportz (O) and Asta variants while the Era and Magna don’t get any safety features. The Elite i20 comes with Smart Pedal that overrides the accelerator pedal during simultaneous operation of brake and accelerator during panic braking. It also comes with impact sensing door unlock feature that unlocks the doors automatically incase of collision.

CONCLUSSION ;

The Hyundai Elite i20 with all these changes surely can compete easily with some of its potential rivals like the Maruti Baleno and the Ford Figo and Volkswagen Polo in the Indian market. The changes to the exterior and interior are limited to cosmetics, but that does not take the light away from the fact that the i20 is considered as one of the bestsellers of the Indian auto market.

EXTERIOR AND STYLE ;

The entire picture of this machine is just amazing to look at and can only dream of owning one. The great uniform look it possesses is contributed by the body colored bumpers, the body side molding, and the body colored door handles. The Executive Edition is available in exclusive pearl white color and a badging to it, while the other variants are offered in eight stunning shades. Furthermore, the side view mirrors too are in the same body shade. There is a side cladding that adds to the style quotient as well as to the safety aspect in restraining any collision occurred from the side. There are stylish set of roof rails fitted on the top. When coming to the rear end, there lies the rear appliqué that boasts the model name. And there is a high mount stop lamp fixed, which alerts other vehicles in announcing its presence. Mahindra Verito’s interior dimensions are generous and you get a practical and roomy cabin. The Verito is 4247 mm long, 1740 mm wide and has a height of 1540 mm. Interior space is it’s strength and the rear seats have plenty of leg and head room and can accommodate comfortably 3 adult passengers. The road visibility is very good and the broad mirrors allow you to see in every direction.Like the exteriors the interior styling too can be best described as modest. Just like the Logan the Verito too features a lot of storage places and you also get a lot of cheap plastics. The use of cheap plastic however does manage to keep the price of the car low.You don’t get an exorbitant feature list with the Verito but it has everything it needs to be practical. For the rear seats you get triple headrests, gradual dim cabin lights, air conditioner, power steering, power windows, driver information system and a rear defogger. At 510 litres the Verito’s boot is good for a big family. On the Verito you also get ABS with EBD and Driver Airbag.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE ;

The Mahindra Verito is powered by a 3-phase 72V induction motor that promises 30.5kW of power and 91Nm torque. A single-speed transmission transfers all this power to the front wheels. The 200Ah Li-ion battery in the car powers all the ancillary functions, including the music system, AC and headlamps. It also charges the 12V battery which is used for the start up. Starting the car is also an art in itself. You turn the key, but it doesn’t go all the way like in your conventional fuelled car. 15 seconds after turning the key, you hear a slight noise –– a subtle ding from the rear of the car, signalling that the car is ready now. After this audible cue, you have to press the drive button located on the lower right side of the dashboard. At this point, the car starts to creep forward. For further progress, select F on the gear lever and you start to move ahead at a reasonable pace. For an additional boost, shift to the B mode which is the phase that I preferred to be in for the entire duration of my drive. In this mode, you get a slight boost. The Mahindra Verito takes a fair bit of time to climb to 40kmph from naught, not ideal for quick getaways…or if you plan on robbing a bank. Mahesh Babu, the CTO of Mahindra Electric, claims that the 0-40kmph as well as 0-60kmph sprints are much faster than what one can achieve in the e2o. The maximum speed I managed to see was 56kmph and it took some time getting there. Achieving Mahindra’s claimed top speed of 86kmph will take both a long time and a long stretch of road.

The ride is pretty firm when compared to its competitors. But it also means the Verito can take the bad roads well. The car is sturdy and keeps the rattles and vibrations in control. The rear seat comfort is the USP among its rivals. It offers good legroom and headroom than the near competitor Dzire. The third passenger in the rear is welcome in the Verito. The cabin is pretty well silent till 100 kmph. After that the engine becomes noisy and harsh. The steering gives a positive feeling and gives great control at speeds. The typical diesel characteristics like the gear lever vibration are absent which is a good thing.

SAFETY FEATURES ;

Primary safety provisions including driver side airbag and ABS with EBD are standard on the top-spec variant. Other safety equipment armed in the sedan are-adjustable head rests in front and rear, immobilizer and electrical rear window child lock. Face sports chrome finished grille and clear lens fog lamps. Side panels get alloy wheels and side moulding. Inside, it gets tachometer, LCD display on instrument cluster, fabric upholstery, mobile holder and bottle holder etc.

CONCLUSSION ;

Mahindra Verito is a perfect option for those looking for a sedan that gives high performance along with appreciable mileage. The car looks pretty good in terms of design, style, and features though may seem a step back as compared to its close rivals. This Verito is aimed to the people who want the sedan experience for a hatch like price. The Verito is well priced that ensures true value for money. The top variant gets all the bells and whistles a premium car can get including the ABS & EBD. In spite of what automobile pundits say about the Indian car market, nothing has fazed Mercedes-Benz, a manufacturer which is set to launch its 10th product and also the most important for the Indian market, the fourth generation C-Class. The importance of the C-Class in India can’t be questioned as we are among the first few to get the right-hand drive model. While it has been the entry to the coveted three pointed club for the whole of last decade, the C-Class has now grown and is no longer Mercedes’ entry-level model in India. EXTERIORS AND LOOKS

Not surprisingly, when it comes to exterior styling, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class seeks inspiration from the new S-Class. It has similar silhouettes as an ‘S’ with a long bonnet, coupe-like roofline and stub tail, but is only smaller in terms of proportion — truly justifying the ‘baby S-Class’ tag.

The Indian version comes with a more distinct Avantgarde face with a bolder two-slat grille which houses a large TriStar Mercedes emblem. The front bumper flaunts an intricate design, including large flared-wing-like air dams and aero lip. But the jewel on the crown is the complex layout of the full LED, adaptive headlights with delicately set Daytime Running Lights.

The muscular side profile shows off prominent light reflecting character lines, intense wheel arches and a thin chrome strip that runs till the rear bumper. The details on the LED taillights are equality impressive. I particularly like the integrated spoiler and chrome diffusers at the back which not just look striking, but also help bring down the new C-Class’ drag coefficient value to an impressive 0.24. The only disappointing bit is the 17-inch 5-twin-spoke alloy wheels which resemble the ones from the outgoing model. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz does manage to deliver an upscale and desirable design as expected from a car of its class.

INTERIORS AND CABIN

As the first interior developed in Mercedes’ Italian design studio, the C-Class cabin artfully blends modern high technology with evocative classic design. One of the few questionable elements is the tabletlike infotainment screen mounted atop the dashboard, but its perfect placement in the driver’s sight lines makes up for any awkwardness. Opting for the panoramic sunroof also reduces headroom, though 6-footers will still have enough space.

Materials quality is excellent, whether you stick with the standard MB-Tex simulated leather upholstery or upgrade to genuine leather. The center stack is particularly attractive, as it’s cut from a single wood veneer sheet. The cabin also gets high marks for usability thanks to Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment interface. The dial controller is very intuitive, but the trackpad hovering above it does take some getting used to. The trackpad uses smartphone gestures (pinch, taps and swipes) to operate some of the features, but it’s not initially clear when to use them.

Front seats provide excellent support and a wide range of adjustments for all-day driving comfort. The sedan also offers adequate room for rear passengers; only the tallest riders will wind up feeling cramped in the backseat. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE

Do you like having plenty of engine choices? Well then good news! The C-Class offers a wide range of engines. The base engine (in the C300) is a turbocharged four-cylinder. For many drivers, this engine should have all the power they’ll need. It feels potent, and it also gets good fuel economy.

AMG C43 models feature a twin-turbo V6 that has better power and acceleration – but worse fuel economy – than the four-cylinder. For the best possible performance, you’ll want one of the high-performance AMG models. The AMG C63 and C63 S each feature a twin-turbo V8. The C63’s engine puts out over 450 horsepower, and the C63 S’ has over 500 horses. Mercedes claims that both AMG models will go from zero to 60 mph in 4 seconds or less, and test drivers report a quick response whenever you press the gas.

RIDE AND HANDLING

The familiar 2.1-litre diesel in the C 220 and C 250 BlueTEC has been fettled for economy and silence, and just mumbles gently while serving useful overtaking performance (although it can get raucous when revved, and isn’t the quietest from cold). The steering gets more direct off-lock and the calibration is terrific. Thanks to the weight cut of 100kg or so, the car never feels bloated. The C isn’t set up to be power-interactive in bends – the attitude is always mild understeer at road speeds – but it’s ultra-faithful and capable. The ride is supple too. OK it pogoes a bit if you nudge the ‘agility control’ switch towards the sporty settings, but you can opt for ‘individual’, and set chassis and powertrain eagerness independently.

The ultimate C is the C63 S, with an M3-beating 517bhp for 0-62mph in 4 seconds. There’s a lesser 483bhp AMG too, but you have to go full fat.

And of course the C is a brilliant cruiser. Driver-assist options use radar, stereo camera and ultrasound to figure out what’s going on all around, further taking the load off the driver. It can look for – and take action to avoid – vehicles, people and other obstacles coming from pretty well any direction except outer space

SAFETY FEATURES

Most luxury small cars earn excellent scores in crash tests, and the C-Class follows suit, getting a five-star overall rating (the best possible) in tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety designates the C-Class as a Top Safety Pick. Still, as high as the C-Class’ scores are, some competitors’ are even better. The Audi A4 and Volvo S60 both earn the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick+ designation.

The C-Class has more standard driver assistance features than class rivals like the Audi A4 or BMW 4 Series. Among them are several features that are uncommon – if not unique – for the luxury small car class. Crosswind assist helps keep the vehicle stable and in line when it detects strong winds (when you’re driving through the mountains or during a rough storm, for example). Driver drowsiness monitoring can detect signs that you might not be fully alert and let you know before you fall asleep at the wheel. Mercedes’ Pre-Safe preps occupants for a crash by tightening seat belts if it detects that a crash is imminent.

There are many available active safety features as well. These include features that are standard or available in many competitors, such as a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, and lane keep assist. There are still some available features that are less common, though. These include pedestrian detection, traffic sign recognition, and active park assist, which helps you size up a parking spot before you try to fit into it and then helps you park.

CONCLUSSION

The new C-Class is a lot better than competition in all aspects including the outgoing version. The new C-Class is locally assembled and it costs INR 43 lakhs (on-road). It is just like the Apple iPhone 6 Plus, stylish and feature-loaded but a bit on the expensive side.
