Audi Q5 Look & Style

The Audi Q5 comes up as a very subtle looking SUV. The overall design of it looks more coupe inspired than a typical SUV. The sloping roof lines, mild flares on the side with a longish bonnet make the Q5 look very suave in nature. The Q5 does not look like a typical in-your-face kind of a SUV but then it still has a bold look and looks contemporary.Having a family face, this one too has a single frame radiator grille which has been finished in gloss chrome. The vertical chrome struts look very neat. The three dimensionally finished bonnet flows very elegantly between the single frame grille to the front windshield making the design look very aerodynamic. The center console also sports a new design that includes a new electronic gear shifter and track pad. Rear seats offer a good amount of legroom matched with lightly bolstered outboard seats and decent headroom. HVAC vents keep rear passengers happy on hot or cold days, and an optional rear seat entertainment package features two huge screens.The seats also fold flat, offering an impressive amount of cargo room. Audi says there’s 54.7 cubic feet of space with the seats stowed. With the second row in place, cargo room is cut down to 21.5 cubic feet of space. We have already witnessed the 3.0-litre, V6 TDI diesel engine in the Audi A6 and Audi A7 earlier, but this motor just doesn’t cease to amaze us every single time. In the Q5, Audi has boosted the output by 5 BHP and 78 Nm, which is quite significant considering the added twist on offer. However the addition in power hasn’t come at the cost of economy and Audi claims that the new Q5 is up to 15 percent more efficient than its predecessor. Power delivery is instant and rewarding and NVH levels are very good with very little diesel grunt audible inside the luxurious cabin.

This engine is mated to a 7-speed S tronic transmission which is at the forefront ensuring smooth cog swapping. There are no paddle shifts even on the top-end variant which comes as a disappointment, however one can take control of things by using the tiptronic function on the gear lever. Performance, as you would expect, is nothing short of explosive with every dab on the accelerator pedal resulting in an instantaneous surge ahead with plenty of reserve still left. Power delivery although linear, is still addictive and there is a definite shove in your knickers when you bury your right foot in the floor.

We can go endlessly with praise about the 3.0-litre TDI engine, it’s that darn good. The motor feels at home at all speeds, whether its ambling around the city, sprinting on open roads or simply cruising on the highways. This mill does a splendid job in hauling the 1.8 tonne Q5 with urgency and blurred scenery. The Audi drive select system offers various modes which control the accelerator pedal characteristics, automatic transmission shift points and amount of steering assist as well. How has Audi managed to boost performance and efficiency at the same time? The German car maker has reduced weight with the use of aluminum on the engine hood and tail gate. Whoever said ‘you can’t have your cake and eat it too’ was wrong, very wrong!

Apart from the engines, the other thing that Audi did not have to do much to was the quattro all-wheel-drive system, which has widely grown to be accepted as one of the best traction aids in the market. The bit of fine-tuning they’ve done has resulted in smoother transitioning from the efficient front-wheel-drive set-up to the all-wheel drive, but can you and I tell the difference? Probably not. What you will notice, however, is the new multi-link suspension set-up with the optional air suspension which has made the ride quality and transfer of weight noticeably more pliant.

You can feel the suspension complying with the quattro system more amicably when you chuck the car into corners, pretending it’s a low-slung sportscar. The A4 diesel is part of the 10 products that Audi is bringing in, to India, this year and we’ve finally managed to get our hands on it. It’s finally out of the woods, so to say, and it’s taken a while to come to India. It’s been close to 7 months, since the new-gen A4 hit our shores; but, back then, it only came with a petrol engine. So, the line-up was a bit incomplete, till the time the diesel was launched; but, there’s good enough reason why it’s taken so much time.

The folks at Audi had to retrograde the engine, to make it suitable for the quality of fuel available in India. The A4 diesel was Euro 6 compatible and hence the company had to make it BSIV compatible and that’s taken up a bit of its time. However, it’s finally here and though, visually, it’s still the same, as its petrol cousin, there are one or two differences that set it apart. The diesel gets a dual exhaust set up at the rear and of course the TDI badge; but other than that it’s all about that engine under the hood.

Audi A4 Look

Let us start with styling. Audi has never been about revolutionary change in terms of styling and the new A4 as you can see here doesn’t look much different from its predecessor. The overall stance of the car is pretty much the same with the planted and wide look that all Audis get. But put the old A4 and the new A4 together and that is when you realize that evolution isn’t such a bad thing. The new A4 gets a wider grille, which even though is quite edgy, lends a more refined and curvy look to the front. Mostly this is because of the fact that the horizontal chrome slats are well contoured and get a lot of intricate detail within them. The headlights of course are the talking points for most Audi car nowadays and the new A4 gets a set of LED headlamps with a fresh new design for the daytime running lights. Again, although not a very different look from the last generation, the LED slashes do look really cool especially when lit up to their full capacity in the day.

Move over to the rear and this wider, meaner stance continues. Again, the design is not much of a difference as compared to what it was, but many smaller changes do tend to make a large difference to the overall scheme of things. The side profile though is pretty much the same as the last gen too but you do get a few more muscular details around the side skirts and the bumper edges.

Audi A4 Comfort

Step inside the cabin and it feels different yet quite familiar. It’s like Audi has taken the perfectly good A4 and turned it up a notch. And the upped notch is more to do with technology than anything else. The traditional clocks have been replaced by a digital screen which allows you to choose between different display options. You can have the traditional tacho and speedo flanking the small info display or you can choose to give prominence to the vehicle information wherein the clocks retire to the bottom corners of each end.

You can even choose the map as your central display to help you keep your eyes on the road. The luxury quotient has gone up as well. There is soft feel plastic and leather all around and you also get wood inlays on the dash and door panels. Though they do tend to look slightly out of place for they are now known to be more of a Japanese trademark than a European or more specifically a German one.

Then there’s the MMI system which has experienced some growth, literally. The screen now measures 12.1inch across and displays everything you might or might not need to know. Also, it is one of the best displays you’ll come across in modern day luxury cars. It is crisp easy to read though the operation will take some time getting used to as the number of buttons have been reduced and scrolling through the options can prove to be a tad too distracting. But Audi has given eight shortcut buttons that you can assign to any function you like so you can have all your preferences at a touch of a button. The driver’s perch is decently comfortable. There’s ample back and side support but the squab could’ve been slightly longer. Also, finding the right driving position will take up a fair bit of setting up and once you do, do remember to save it in the memory. Though the headroom is ample all around, taller driver (6’2 upwards) could feel restrained. Same is the story at the rear. It can seat four in comfort as the space in the cabin has increased but seating five is a challenge and the under thigh support also could have been better.

Audi A4 Engine

The car we got was the 30 TFSI which employs a considerably smaller 1.4-litre four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. It might not sound like much but it does dish out 150PS of power and 250Nm of torque, impressed yet? It is the same engine that is employed in numerous VW cars and frankly it was only a matter of time before it came to this segment.

Start the car and wakes up in the most undramatic fashion. There’s no dab of revs or drama, it’s quite straight forward. Put it into drive via the new rectangular gear lever and it takes off effortlessly. We being us, floored the throttle as we pulled out on an empty road just outside our hotel in Bhubaneshwar and the result was not what we expected. There was a sense of urgency from the engine but there was no pushed-in-the-seat drama. What we got instead was a linear and smooth delivery of torque right up to its powerband at 5,000rpm. And before we knew it we were well on our way to breach the speed limit. The acceleration is borderline undramatic but relentless.

You never run out of power and neither do you run out of the torque. And the new 7-speed STronic transmission complements the engine just as well. The shifts are responsive and are in essence based on the heaviness of your right foot. Keep the tacho from crossing the 2,500rpm mark and the shifts will be relaxed and focused more towards fuel economy and comfort. It can sit at 120kmph on the highway with the needle barely breaking the 2,000rpm mark thanks to the overdrive seventh gear. Put your foot down however and keep the needle in the peak torque band and the A4 responds accordingly. The shifts are sharper and almost instantaneous, pull a paddle and the tacho needle starts to dance while the engine sings a brilliant note. The steering too is well weighed at high speed and light at docile pace. It feels sharp and direct, the feedback though is still not at par with the competition which does tend to take away a bit of fun even if only slightly. It is clearly focused towards people who want the controls in their own hands and it shows.The suspension setup is on the stiffer side but yet the ride is pliant and forgiving. The bigger potholes do make themselves heard but are rarely felt. The brakes provide plenty of stopping power and great feel and are also fitted with the brake energy regeneration system.

Now, the Audi A4 was never really known for its handling but was always an impressive car when it came to ride quality and overall refinement. And the new A4 is a step above. Refinement levels including noise and vibration are top notch and actually feel a class or two above what the A4 is expected to be at. The older lifeless steering too has been dramatically improved and even though the A4 does feel very floaty at high speeds, the steering does give a lot more feedback than ever before while still being extremely easy to drive in crowded city conditions. But ride comfort is of paramount importance in most cases and the A4 really excels in this category. When it makes it to India, the A4 will possibly be the most comfortable car in its category with its plush and smooth ride comfort. Take it over bumpy roads and there is almost no thumping and thudding and the A4, even with its low profile tyres and large wheels is like sitting on your living room sofa.

The Audi A4 has a perfect blending of high power and luxury, and has a powerful presence on the road with the latest-in-technology equipment and styling features.So, to wrap it up, the A4 is not much different in the way it looks on the outside but when you peel of the exterior, it is a whole new machine on the insides. Now, Indian buyers do have the option of buying cars like the very capable Mercedes-Benz C-Class (which we think is the A4’s biggest competition in India), but we think that Audi might have a surprise winner on their hands with the new A4. With the launch of the new A4 planned within a couple of months from now, all that is left to wait and see is the price point that Audi will launch at.
